When I visited Hong Kong for a week in 2002, there was no other realistic option, for finance concerns and the `lust for life’ drive, than the depraved Chungking: intrigue seemed to lurk around every corner. While staying there, my guesthouse manager suggested I rent and stare the *Chungking Express*, a 1994 film by Won Kar Wai, loosely connected around the building. I never got around to it…until three years later…and in a plan I’m tickled I waited to inspect this toothsome romp about savor, obsession and betrayal, for it sparked the nostalgia cylinders and left me in that awed, giddy location that only the best of films can do.

Made on the speedily by Won Kar Wai as a means of rejuvenating his creative energy, *Chungking Mansions* originally consisted of three interlocking stories, but one met the axe (to resurface as its absorb film) to give profitable attention (i.e. running time) to those that remained. Little but charming, with enough visceral action and mystery to retain the poke from flagging.

What are the truly grand, classic romances on film? Many would mediate of “Casablanca”, and justifiably so. However, in its fill charming, subtle plan, “I Know Where I’m Going” deserves a high area on any such list. My wife and I decided to ogle this as our “Valentine’s Day” movie–a perfect choice.

Dame Wendy Hiller stars as a vivid, independent and arrogant young woman who “knows where she is going”. Several days of terrible weather prevent our heroine from leaving the coastal village to meet her intended on the island. During this time, she meets a naval officer who also happens to be the local laird, played by Roger Livesey. Even though he is attracted to Ms. Hiller, the Livesey character does not try to “sweep her off her feet”–he simply opens her eyes to the charms and rewards of a simple life where “people are not poor–they unprejudiced don’t have any money”. Before long, she develops feelings for this man, which makes her even more anxious to advance the island and her husband-to-be, so that she can maintain her word and “do the just thing”. Of course, you can’t fight fate–can you?

There are various subplots animated an feeble Scottish curse, a frightful encounter with a whirlpool, and relationships spicy some of the local people. Although shot in sad and white, the beauty of Scotland is definitely one of the “stars” of this film. While Hiller and Livesey are generous in the leading roles, they receive splendid attend from Pamela Brown and a group of Scottish actors, including Finlay Currie. Actually, were there any films attractive Scotland from the 30s to 60s which did not have Finlay Currie in the cast? He is like the patron saint of Scottish movie actors!

Criterion, as usual, gives us a lovely image, and some nice extras to go with this Powell/Pressburger classic. When Martin Scorcese is asked if he would “remake” the film, he basically says no–why mess around with perfection? Thank you, Mr. Scorcese–a man of taste, as well as talent!

This is a movie where you can fair curl up with your partner, relax ( except for that whirlpool! ) and like some unforgettable characters who learn what is really vital in life. A fabulous DVD to beget. Now–when is the next flight to Scotland?

This is one of the gigantic romantic movies, and like all of the Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger films, it’s quirky and new. Joan Webster (Wendy Hiller) has always known where she’s going. She’s headstrong and definite to marry a man who is wealthy and has area. Her fiance is an industrialist (this is at the tail slay of WWII), older than she, who is living on a leased island off the hover of Scotland. They’re to be married on the island, and Joan takes the philosophize to a slight village on the glide, where she’ll go across on the ferry. This is Joan Webster’s yarn, her determination to come by to the island, her growing unease with MacNeil because he doesn’t fit into her plans, her putting at risk a young couple who are in care for and, as she comes to realize, may have better values than she does. There is an atmosphere of fog and mist and sun which is beautifully photographed. There is a storm-swept boat sail into the teeth of a giant whirlpool, all the scarier because it was filmed in the days before CGO.

Roger Livesey is terrific as MacNeil, the last of the lairds of Kiloran. He made this movie only a couple of years after he did The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp for the Archers. Here he finds himself attracted to this headstrong young woman, then falling in savor with her.

Pamela Brown plays his friend. She was a good actress plagued with abominable health. Here she’s all favorite sense but with also a grand deal of opinion. She’s a fantastic looking creature.

And there’s Wendy Hiller. In my belief this is the best movie role she ever had. She nails the share with her certitude, her unease vivid that despite her intentions her plans may be changing, her final recognition that she has been ghastly about a lot of things.

At the extinguish, MacNeil enters the ruins and breaks the curse…and we realise what the curse was really all about…then hears in the distance the pipers playing, slowly growing louder. These were the pipers hired to play at Joan’s wedding and he last saw them and Joan as they prepared to wing across to the island. He looks out and sees the pipers, led by Joan, marching along the road toward him. And then, without strings or lush orchestrations, the primitive Scottish folk song kicks in sung simply…

I know where I’m going,

I know who’s going with me,

The Lord knows who I like,

But the de’il knows who I’ll marry.

I’ll have stockings of silk,

This is one of the gigantic Powell and Pressburger movies. It’s not fair romantic, but it’s romantic without being sentimental. It’s a grand account and a astronomical film.

Over the years, it seems that the Robin Hood saga has been a popular of sorts for film makers to re-invent, manipulate, and showcase again and again. No doubt due to global appeal and the premise of a hero taking from the rich, giving to the bad, and fighting the well-behaved fight.

Of all the Robin Hood films ever produced, it’s readily apparent that Prince of Thieves relies less on advantageous historical accuracy and leans more toward Hollywood flair which collected makes for an gripping film. Despite using no English accent (which appears to grate on some reviewers for some reason), Kevin Costner presents himself well in the role of Robin Hood. Coupled with splendid performances from Morgan Freeman, Alan Rickman, Christian Slater, and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, (to name unbiased a few), the epic moves at an interesting skedaddle and hits the designate as a stand up adventure movie that doesn’t disappoint.

As for the original 2 disc special edition release of this movie, it unprejudiced got a whole lot better. Not having to flip the disc over any more to notice the entire feature like in the first release, you now have a original digital transfer and a remastered DTS 5.1 soundtrack and both are outstanding. On disc 2 you have huge bonus material enhancing the value and enjoyment even further. Included is a decent documentary on the making of Prince of Thieves, Bryan Adams performing his music video of ‘(Everything I do) I do it for you’, an interactive mediaeval weapons gallery, cast and crew bios, production notes, interviews with cast and crew, and trailers and t.v. spots.

You don’t really have to be a die-hard Robin Hood fan to be pleased this movie. The film has a few flaws and stretches the historical aspect somewhat but it plays out well with plenty of action, adventure, humor, and fun. This special edition release would be a apt addition to any DVD collection and I recommend it to everyone.

I was at [local store] one day and saw the extended Robin Hood DVD on sale. I decided to remove it. I conception that I liked all the swordplay, action, fantasy tales. I have to recount you. It was a stout steal! It was only [$$] for such a huge extended movie.

Plot – Our celebrated Robin Hood is in a Jerusalem prison. He escapes with a moor, Azeem (Morgan Freeman), and his friend, Peter. Peter doesn’t construct it, but wants Robin to promise that he will protect his sister, Marion. Robin agrees and finds his method home with Azeem. They peer Robin’s father tiring, and their servant blinded. The Sheriff of Nottingham (Alan Rickman, who is perfect in the role) killed Robin’s father and is doing immoral deeds to the unpleasant people in the status. Robin and Azeem slay up in Sherwood Forest and meet its occupants, including John Slight and Will Scarlett. They all team up and choose to fight succor against the Sheriff. (94/100)

Acting – A lot of people abominate how Kevin Costner speaks in this movie. I really didn’t witness a change in his roar at all. So it didn’t really bother me! I belief Kevin did well as Robin. Christian Slater and Alan Rickman were the two who stole the movie. Christian was large as the mysterious and confusing Will Scarlett. Alan Rickman was hilarious and base as the Sheriff. They both were enormous and should have deserved huge credit for their positions. Also, there is a short cameo by Sean Connery. (96/100)

Action and Violence – There is a lot of action and violence in this movie. It could have been rated R. There is a lot of swordplay, arrows being fired into faces, fist fights, and blood. I consider any action man would like this movie. Critical Action Scenes : Overrun By Celts, Fiery Assault, Cheating The Hangman, Storming The Castle, and Final Duel. To check out these scenes, rob the DVD and access them through Scene Selection. (95/100)

Sexual Themes – There are some sexual themes in this epic. There is a scene where Marion is about to be raped from the Sheriff. Also, Robin swims around nude under a waterfall. So there is some sexual swear. I don’t really assume it was needed though. (89/100)

The Two Discs and The Extended Version – The extended version is very gracious. It explains a lot more about the Sheriff. There is also some action achieve into some places. It is worth the money.

The extended version comes with two discs. Thankfully, you didn’t have to “turn the disc over” to contemplate the “whole” movie. So I was gratified that I could impartial inspect the whole feature film on one disc. The other discs are loaded with extras. There is commentaries, documentaries, making of features, galleries, trailers, and more.

Overall, this movie is very well done. It is very excellent and worth the money to remove. Don’t catch the modern disc. It isn’t worth it! Unbiased assume this. It has tons of action, romance, some comedy, glowing sets and landscapes, and unbiased an all around gigantic feel to it.

I’m Judy Irving, the producer/director of “Wild Parrots,” and I’d like to address Wes’s misconceptions in “Warning: DVD is not in wide mask.” The film was shot in 16mm (1.66 to 1), which is the same shape as a tv shroud. When it was blown up to 35mm for theatrical release, each shot in the movie has to lose 39% of its novel image at top and/or bottom, to near at the 1.85 to 1 wide-screen aspect ratio. For each shot, I had to settle what to lose: head room? bottom? or a runt of both? For the DVD release, I specifically requested that the film be mastered in its unique 16mm dimensions, so that viewers could sight 1) 39% more image, and 2) how each shot was originally framed. Wes’s confusion may have resulted from IMDB stating that the film was shot in wide-screen. It wasn’t. Luxuriate In!

Not only an endearing, curious and environmentally knowing documentary, this film is also droll, thought-provoking and enchanting. The anecdote of Price Bittner’s bound to become the expert on and the caretaker of the flock of wild parrots of Telegraph Hill in San Francisco, while he avoids most of the appearances of being connected to society or to society’s values along the contrivance, certainly makes one wonder about the importance of some of the taken-for-granted symbols of success. The respect he earns for the spy of the birds is a result of the intelligence, sensitivity, and acute observation skills he brings to his passion, while he wryly maintains a charmingly self-deprecating notion of himself– even if he DOES bid being eccentric. What’s wicked with eccentric?

It is a movie about the parrots as worthy as about Heed. If you can glance this movie and not be convinced of the individuality of the birds’ personalities, then you are hopelessly anthropocentric. If you spy Mingus dance and are not convinced he’s enjoying the music, or if Connor’s tale in no intention moves you, then you may have become far too diminutive in your plan of the world; a bird’s observe plan is certainly called for. This is a quirky and resplendent record, lovingly told. I did not get the ending to be a surprise, as many did, but agree that it was uplifting.

First, a word about this childish boycott. “Grindhouse” gave us two shiny genre films for the effect of one in the theaters. It was a once in a lifetime experience for most of us and a chance to study the two most bada$* directors in Hollywood give us 3+ hours of hardcore terror entertainment including the funniest faux-trailers your likely to ever gape. And it bombed. Mountainous time. Why? Because indolent America said it’d wait for the DVD because the film was too long and lost the chance to befriend a truly quick-witted notion and indicate that we are sick and tired of cardboard cutout PG-13 teen panic and poor remakes of beloved cult classics. They went to behold “Disturbia” instead. “Grindhouse” was what honest anxiety fans -hell, what all legal film fanatics- have been dying for and shame on all of you who missed it. So the studio took a loss for taking a chance on this notion and as a result, they’ve split the two films up with extra scenes that were reduce for time and are giving us these two films as we haven’t yet seen them, each in double-dic editions packed with extras. Awesome, upright? Weeeeeellllll, now the same whiners who stiffed the films in the theaters are exasperated they missed out and want both films on one DVD (as if there’d even be room) for a discount notice. Sorry, but it don’t work that contrivance. The theatrical nick was packaged as honest that, an experience for the theaters simulating the double-feature drive-in days of faded. Even if that experience would translate to DVD, why would the company re-release it in a get that already failed miserably? The bottom line is this: we now have another chance to demonstrate that THIS is what we as panic fans want to recognize and the only diagram to do that is to rob these great-looking DVDs. The opinion that making the films bomb yet again on DVD is going to lead to some super-duper deluxe theatrical edition must have been conceived in the mind of a five year feeble on crack. If we don’t encourage these editions, these films will die and the studio will extinguish no more money on this failed project or any like it in the future. This is basic business sense. Abet moral terror and boycott crappy remakes and bloated sequels *cough*Spiderman3*cough* instead.

“Planet Awe” as you already know, was Robert Rodriguez’s half of “Grindhouse” and while it’s artistically unfavorable to it’s sister film (Tarantino’s “Death Proof”), Rodriguez brings the campy action, hardcore gore, and zombie awesomeness hard and snappy like you know he can. The music, as always, rocks and grooves, the deaths will earn you laugh and recoil in disgust, and Rose McGowan may well be the sexiest thing on the planet. The account is nonsense, of course, and the dialogue is hammy and shooting a grenade launcher directly into the ground will NOT begin you into the air (not in one section, anyway) like a superhero, but this film is of the kind where this sort of unreal madness only makes you cherish it more and leaves you drunk and giddy with the chaos. It’s amusing, but you will cherish it. Worthy of “Planet Anxiety” makes me feel like I’m watching the most kicka$# video game ever made; a game I’d really adore to play.

The movie is packed with recurring jokes and comical, memorable dialogue (mighty of which is based on Rose McGownan’s staunch personality) that pays off in spades down the line. Rodriguez did not skimp on the cast, either. Obvious, he cast most of his family plus his doctor and even his freakin’ real-estate agent, but they are all astonishing. Bruce Willis chews the scenery, Freddy Rodriguez is THE zombie-killing machine, Quentin Tarantino plays “rapist #1″, and you know it’s a factual undead party when Tom Savini hits the scene. Also, Fergie plays a lesbian who gets her brain eaten by the marauding undead. Yes, I know if this was realistic the scene would have played out like the Simpsons episode where the zombies moan “braaaaaainsss” as they feel her head and then, finding none, leave the so-vapid-she’s-sexy pop tart to ponder her 15 minutes of fame; but like I was saying, this is not a realistic movie and any expressionless Black-eyed Peas member is a satisfactory one.

If anyone knows how to do extras legal, it’s Robert Rodriguez. You’ve got the standard commentary, plus the audience reaction track from the film’s premiere (a personal popular), his patented “10 little film school”, and yes, the “Machette” trailer collected precedes the film. Sweet. The rest of the bonus features largely mirror the “Death Proof” DVD with lots of esteem for the cast and stuntpeople; very informative and very challenging. I was actually hoping for more restored footage to the staunch movie then we accumulate (more crazy babysitter twins, anyone? ) and the visual defects and missing reel -which was fun in the theater- are calm there and not nearly as cute, but these are my only gripes. I could seriously write for days about all the things I savor about this movie, but I’ll objective say one more thing before wrapping up: I distinct could go for some barbeque.

“Planet Dread” brings some seriously awesome action-horror that delivers everything you want in a zombie film and you’d be a fool to pass on it objective because you don’t procure a whole other movie free. Select it, prefer “Death Proof”, and then go wave your copies at the moron down the street who’s boycotting.

The best fraction of Grindhouse (besides the unfounded trailers) was Robert Rodriguez’s Planet Fear, which is now on DVD nearly a month after Quentin Tarantino’s Death Proof was released. Though the Weinstein Company sadly decided to split the films for home video release (besides Machete, the deceptive trailers aren’t here), the pair’s Grindhouse films are an experience to say the least. What I like most about this movie is that Om Puri is the central character, not Patrick Swayze. It is almost too easy obtain the western foreigner achieve the day. Patrick Swayze does a shimmering job depicting this balance by allowing his character’s hot-blooded, American nature to boil to the surface. In instances where Max is directly fervent, the place only becomes worse, and Max realizes his rough and topple ways are only short-lived producing cramped carry out. Like many other fans of Russell Peters, I got to know his comedy from his 40 shrimp video download of the Internet. Watching it over and over again, I was amazed by his accents, facial expressions, situational comedy and improvised skits. So I bought this DVD hoping for more. And more you net, as in more of the same. The DVD’s main feature is an 1 hour 20 limited video of him onstage somewhere in San Francisco. He is performing to a multi-racial crowd, and as usual, his entire indicate is devoted to multi-racial comedy. Many of his jokes are of the same nature as his detestable download, and about 20 – 25 minutes of the note is actually him performing the same comedy as that found in his download. Another genuine 10 – 15 minutes of the indicate is comprised of him pausing and the audience laughing. So of the 1 hr and 20 minutes, only about half of it is novel comedy. And none of it was as expedient as that found in his download. So for me, it was not that humorous. For someone who has never seen his internet download however, this DVD is spacious. The innovativeness and wit of his comedy is as worthy as anyone else out there in the US now. And when it comes to racial jokes, his is the best out there.

“Home Alone 2″ has everything the unique did, and some extras. It’s a puny bit different, but in a splendid diagram. Kevin McAllister (Macaulay Culkin) boards the rank plane and heads to Modern York City while his family is on their diagram to Miami. Only this time, he’s not stuck at home, he’s in a sizable city. Also, in this one, he makes a few friends, most notably a pigeon lady and a toy store owner. “Home Alone 2″ has more drama in it than the first one did, and when you hear Kevin talk to the pigeon lady and score out why he vows to end the ‘Wet Bandits’ once again, you’ll spy that.

But don’t score me putrid, “Home Alone 2″ doesn’t suffer any in the comedy department. The traps are objective as clever and hilarious, and the movie is impartial as worthy of a holiday classic as the unusual “Home Alone” was. If you liked the new “Home Alone,” or if you like Christmas comedy movies, I’d recommend getting “Home Alone 2: Lost in Unique York.”

Last time around, Kevin (Macaulay Culkin) was left home alone (pun intended) by his family in a frantic urge to accumulate to the airport. And to add insult to injury, he had to deal with a couple of bumbling sillies–burglars who wanted to burglarize his house–who went by the name of the “Wet Bandits.” This time around, it’s more of the same, but with a cramped difference: this time, he gets on the despicable plane, and is left to his occupy devices in the “Stout Apple”–a/k/a Modern York City.

The residence is lovely similar to the last one in many ways: Kevin gets into disaster due to getting into it with his older brother, and is punished. He gets fed up with his family treating him unfairly, and in the midst of his angst, wishes that he could have a vacation on his gain, without any of his family. The next morning, in a frantic race, the family rushes to the airport to go to Florida for Christmas vacation. In the airport, Kevin stops to do some batteries into his shrimp camcorder (which will be largely necessary later in the film), and as soon as he lifts his head, his family are long gone. He spots an older guy from the backside who looks like his dad, and therefore gets on the same plane as this gentleman, believing that it really was his dad. Needless to say, he was in for a spacious surprise when the plane landed.

Meanwhile, the “Wet Bandits” (Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern) flee from jail, and are in the “Titanic Apple” as well. You know what happens: they wicked paths, and these two clowns are looking for revenge. The slapstick craziness that was seen in the last film, is taken up an extra notch, and is made gut-bustingly funnier as a result. (And again, unbiased listening to Daniel Stern’s demented operatic-like screeching as he gets his, alone, honest slams the wind straight out of me. It’s too hilarious!)

As for poignant moments, last time around, the “scary” character was an ragged man who was rumored to be a murderer. This time, it’s a homeless woman who dwells in Central Park, and her companions are a bunch of pigeons.

These Home Alone films are recommended for anyone with a taste for over-the-top, sinister slapstick humor, added with a gigantic dose of mischief. Also recommended if you want to bring out the kid in you.

I have been waiting years for “It’s a Gift” to develop it onto DVD, and it would appear that my wish will finally approach correct with the release of this place. I will undoubtedly rob the collection, but I already have the Criterion version of “The Bank Dick” (and also their substantial release of the collection of 6 short films), and “Chickadee” and “Impartial Man”, while crowd-pleasers, never made it onto my list of must-see Fields films. I, like many others, am baffled by the choice of “International House” for inclusion, as Fields probably only spends about 1/30th of the time on veil, but if owning it is the heed I must pay to search for a mammoth copy of “It’s a Gift”, then so be it!

I also hope that enough people purchase this to prompt additional releases of some of the other pure Fields vehicles like “Man on the Flying Trapeze”, “The Customary Fashioned Arrangement”, “Never Give a Sucker an Even Crash”, and “Poppy”. (Now that would form for a nice boxed-set!)

For me, Fields’s comedy is calm remarkably unique, usually bitingly droll, always a treat for the ears, and sometimes even touching. 10 lickety-split quotes from “Bank Dick” and “It’s a Gift”:

“It’s a Gift” and “The Bank Dick” are broad mainly because of Fields, but they have big supporting casts (the titanic Franklin Pangborn as Bank Examiner J. Pinkerton Snoopington; Kathleen Howard as Amelia Bissonette; Tammany Young as the store clerk in “Gift”; Shemp Howard as bartender Joe Guelpe; Grady Sutton as Og Oggilby; Una Merkel as Egbert’s mother-in-law; and Russell Hicks as the lugubrious J. Frothingham Waterbury.

“Chickadee” is noted for the pairing of Fields and Mae West, but it always irked me that (no offense to you Mae fans out there) vital cover time was taken away from Fields so that we could watch the frail Ms. West indicate off her grand assets. “You Can’t Cheat an Unprejudiced Man” is remarkable closer to my heart, especially for the banter between Fields and Charlie McCarthy and some of the circus scenes, but overall my preference is for all Fields, all the time. (OK, I’ll admit that a diminutive Mortimer Snerd is never a awful thing) .

In a perfect world, we would be able to assume and decide which W.C. Fields DVD to ogle on any given day. Since they are so few and far between, I have to laud the upcoming release of these films, regardless of whether all 5 really present of the Ample Man’s talents to their best. And who knows, maybe if there is enough interest, the other substantial Fields films will hit the market soon. Anyway, the few minutes of Fields in “International House” is noteworthy distinguished better than 2+ hours of the latest action adventure extravaganza taking up mask site at the gigaplex.

“As my dear ragged grandfather Litvak said (honest before they swung the trap), he said ‘You can’t cheat an impartial man. Never give a sucker an even crash or smarten up a chump.’”

Well THANK YOU UNIVERSAL!!! It’s about time!!! W.C. Fields is one of THE greatest comedians EVER, yet his catalog has been grossly overlooked. I can be sure with Universal issuing these the quality will be top notch. Criterion had already issued The Bank Dick, so I’m not certain why it’s on here too, but I won’t complain as the other 4 are certainly worth the effect of admission!

Now, PLEASE continue to release the many other Fields movies that are out there. I’m really hoping this is only 1 of several volumes that will be issued.

Any and all Fields fans should steal this, occupy another 1 or 2 for gifts to family and friends, the better this release does the better chances of more to follow!

And if you haven’t seen Fields ever??? You have to remove this, this man is one of THE building blocks of all original comedy!

MUST Peer CLASSIC CINEMA! Fields dead burn style of comedy is a drastic opposite to today’s novel, cheap, “swiftly food” style of comedy. Today’s comedy is a like a flash laugh and it’s over, never as amusing the second time around, but with Fields, each viewing makes you laugh more as you inaugurate to recount pesonally to W.C. and all his trials and tribulations of life that he interweaves into his comedy.

On a personal level Fields as a comedian sneaks into your heart and mind causing you to accomplish a rapport with him and the daily events of life that shape and mold all of us to a obvious extent. Fields, in his never ending struggle for control of those daily events brings about some of the most classic comedy ever to be captured on film. This my friends is THE golden age of comedy captured for all to like, do not miss it.

I’ve watched all the discs now and quality is as obliging as it’s going to regain, very, very kindly. The packaging is very nicely done too.

As far as the choice of movies included… Well it’s too poor they effect the Bank Dick in taking a station away from another possible inclusion, seeing a high quality Criterion Collection version is already available. International House is a cry, I’ve always liked it, not so clear it is a “fit” in a Fields collection however, but his material is very proper in the movie. Perhaps 3 more collections can arrive out making enough room in each of the collections for movies like this where Fields only had a portion in them.

Someone mentioned Six Of A Kind, IT IS available on DVD as portion of the Burns Allen collection, as well as The Grand Broadcast, Sally Of The Sawdust, and 6 shorts Fileds on Criterion Collection which is well-behaved quality.
