I was angry to earn this dvd plot. I popped it in the player and I notion my audio was messed up. The spooky narrator was mute and the shows started quiet and didnt compose sense. I conception I better check Amazon to view the latest details. Reach to net out, the company forgot to effect the narrator in. I dont really know how you can forget something like that but thats anther chronicle. I emailed the company and the told me to send it support and they’ll send out a copy within a week. What a worry. Im so sick of buying ghastly products then having to go to the post office to mail them help to the sellers. Plus I have to wait an extra two weeks (with shipping) unprejudiced to eye the exhibit. The exhibit is qualified but its unrealistic and feels more like a cheaply made scare movie sans the gore. I do indulge in some of the shows they’ve had and I esteem the narrator of the demonstrate, probably second best to Robert Stack. I recommend this explain to people who like Unsolved Mysteries, only if they wished the program was extended by forty minutes or more. The dvd is ravishing bare and looks like it was made for comely cheap. Probably the reason why the was narrator left out. It is first-rate for a fright or two though.

As this film opens, a sulky fourteen year frail Walter (Haley Joel Osment) is about to be deposited with his two gruff and inappropriate outmoded uncles against his will by his mother Mae (Kyra Sedgwick) while she supposedly pursues her education and a career. Hub and Garth McCann, played respectively by Robert Duvall and Michael Caine, are no more enamored of the plot than is Walter, but an uneasy truce occurs between them as Walter comes to understand their eccentricities and in fact serves as somewhat of an outlet for Garth’s desire to determine down somewhat in his final years. One of the elements twhich makes the film a legal delight is the obscene nature of the antics of these “former men”, whether it is shooting at traveling salesmen for fun or alienating their relatives to absorb their solitude. The backdrop to the anecdote is that Hub and Garth are rumored to be quite wealthy; and in fact Walter’s mother instructs him to attempt to locate the source and spot of their supposed wealth. (Perhaps the mafia, or bank robberies, or the foreign legion? )
As Walter settles in with them and their numerous dogs (and a pig who thinks he’s a dog), the “state suddenly thickens” as Hub acts strangely and Walter discovers mysterious evidence of a lovely young woman somewhere in their history. Garth tells Walter a wonderful record of foreign adventure and intrigue gripping Hub and the bewitching princess Jasmine, and the epic is actually incorporated into the movie in the produce of the adventure epics of fifty years ago with Emanuelle Vaugier playing the role of Hub’s lost savor. Meanwhile, some “venerable” circus animals near, including a tired and sick obsolete lion who Walter nurses support to health as he enjoys the “jungle” habitat provided by the corn field that has emerged from their failed attempt to grow a vegetable garden. The movie reaches a improbable climax as the forces of sterling confront the forces of outrageous (right comical book style) and Walter is forced to confront the fact that life is chunky of surprises, not all of which include gay endings, and that we have to be strong enough to win bad truths and go on.
But, of course, any description of the region doesn’t yelp the appeal of this film; the storyline is simply the backdrop for the life which is infused into this movie by the trustworthy performances of the stars, the great directing, and the intention in which the fable unfolds. It is fun yet touching, with enough elements of the unexpected interspersed with truly laugh out loud funny incidents to manufacture the almost two hours hover by. It’s hard to know who is more attractive, those traditional second hand lions Robert Duvall and Michael Caine (who do their reliable talents to spend in a film they have stated that they really enjoyed making) or Jasmine, the circus lion who tedious in life was destined for her moment of glory. And the legend has a genuine symmetry, both in the juxtaposition of the opening and closing scenes and in the brief appearance of Josh Lucas as the adult Walter. Finally, the climatic moment is followed by a tedious conclusion to the tale which incorporates a truly amazing finale.

In some aspects this is a far from perfect film; in some respects it would be easy to write a notable review detailing the fact that the situation was pure fantasy and that no attempt was made to seriously address many of the issues which the movie raises. But such criticisms would not be consistent with the mood which the movie evoked for me and the remainder of the audience. This movie is about life, about its surprises and its enjoyment, and as corny as it is it is also enormous fun. I enjoyed it so powerful that I have chosen to ignore one of my personal reviewing rules; I decided to round up my rating to five stars in spite of the fact that I haven’t decided if it is safe enough so that I will want to hold the DVD. I know that I’ll savor watching it several more times and decided that was honorable enough. So, go glance this lighthearted film when you want to smile and laugh and feel proper about life and it will confirm that whether you’re outmoded or a teenager it’s tranquil possible to learn and grow and have a apt time.

It occurs to me as I sit here pondering my review of “Secondhand Lions” that I must somehow cover the first words that arrive to mind. Words, phrases, such as “a feel-good movie” or “profitable family fun” or “heart-warming.” As if it were, well, “uncool” to stamp a movie such things these days, almost like a movie kiss of death. Isn’t this a time of Hollywood special effects? Of hot babes and pyrotechnics? Of gratuitous violence and sensationalism? So it is. And so this movie is not. And oh, we are a blissful audience for it!
Haley Joel Osment, to whom many of us in the movie audience were introduced in “Sixth Sense,” plays Walter, a young boy whose mother (Kyra Sedgewick) pursues everything in life but motherhood. He finds himself dumped like excess baggage on the well weathered front stoop of his two uncles’ country house. The uncles, played with improbable eccentricity by Michael Caine and Robert Duvall, resist but later embrace their young nephew. How the three bond into a upright family is a story that does indeed warm the heart, lighten the spirit, and perhaps even restore a archaic conception in today’s cynical world that goodness, yes, goodness, unexcited has a station on the silver cover. Osment is absolutely first rate in this movie, and the two vintage stars, Caine and Duvall, mild shine as brightly as ever, if not more so.

First off, yes there are a lot of problems with this as right history. This is not Gettysburg or Gods and General. Don’t deem they ever state out for it to be. This is for the person who wants more personalities, more emotions and less history. So PLEASE do not reflect this against the two movies based on the Shaaras’ Books. This whole intent of this was distinctive different and it achieves what it situation out to do.
This is not for historians, this is for the people who have a dinky knowledge and interest in the Civil War – and likely that is all they want.
For someone looking for a more emotional plan of the Civil War, with more ‘people and feelings’ than accurate history, then this is a very nice read. It is the fictionalised epic of the Geyers and the Hales, cousins – one family of the South, the other from the North, that derive themselves divided and fighting each other during the War Between the States in the US. The Geyers were farmers, of the land, though were not slave owners, and the record focuses around their eldest son, John, an artist who went into the war as an artist correspondent, torn by his treasure for both families and seeing both sides of the argument. He hates the institution of Slavery, a hatred amplified by the hanging of his dismal friend, a freed man for hiding fugitive slaves. The Hales were city-folk. Not only were they divided on their views, but by their styles of life. You scrutinize all the various scenes of how families were divided, how the glory of war could turn sour for the many boys simply looking for adventure.

There was a exact John Geyser, and he did arrangement a lot of pictures as his time as a soldier. But he was not a war correspondent, and not that professional of an artists. Serene is immature drawing carry a power to tell the horrors of war.
So lift the ‘history’ with a grain of salt and bask in the ‘emotions’ of the tall conflict that ripped families and friends apart.
Stacey Keech is simply marvellous as Jonas Steel, and I defy anyone not to be moved by his and Julia Duffy’s Mary performance as Mary, the woman Jonas loves and loves. Duffy, best known for Designing Women and Bob Newheart, explain a charming, heart-wrenching portrayal of sweet Mary. Peck is shipshape as Lincoln, in a roll he really wanted to play.

So pop the popcorn and sit wait on and appreciate the sweeping ‘Gone With the Wind’ Hollywood version of the Civil War. There is attractive acting and a lot of nice ‘historical’ touches since Bruce Catton was consultant to the film.
The DVD is the rotund length version. Many video copies are a shortened version, so you you will be thrilled the gape it in its intended invent.
Be warned. This is NOT a special edition with added footage. This “Recut” version is a drastically shortened 5 hour slit of the novel almost 7 hour long narrative mini-series. The novel uncut version is composed available on Amazon’s website. Why Sony/Columbia is releasing this is beyond me. Who, aside from those with ADD would want to choose a truncated version? The series is presented on 2 discs, compared to 3 discs on the unique. It is in fullscreen with 2.0 mono sound and optional English and French subtitles.

Although the split-screen technique had been around for a decade or so, it was usually more notorious for its failures than its success, and the actor required to play dual roles usually took substantial heat for their failure to fabricate two physically identical but distinctly different characterizations on mask. But with THE PARENT TRAP, with the difficult dual role resting on the shoulders of an extremely young star, Walt Disney struck gold. It would be the single highest grossing film the studio had released up to that time, and even some forty years later the baby-boomers who flocked to glimpse it in 1961 regard it as one of their popular movie experiences.
But THE PARENT TRAP has a lot more going for it than mere nostalgia. The cast is really, really suited, featuring the ever-likable Maureen O’Hara and Brian Keith in leading roles and a host of gargantuan character actors (including Leo G. Carroll and Nancy Kulp) in minor roles. And then there is Haley Mills. The daughter and sister of notorious English actors, Mills was no newcomer to the camouflage when THE PARENT TRAP went before the cameras–she had even picked up an Oscar for her earlier Disney film POLLYANNA. Even so, this was no guarantee that she could pull off the feat of double roles, something that had daunted even the legendary Bette Davis. But she did.
The account has been told so often that surely every one knows it by now. A wife delivers twin daughters–but shortly afterward divorces her husband, and each wins custody of one child. The children are raised without any knowledge of each other’s existence… until they unexpectedly bump into each other at summer camp, assign two and two together, and devise a design to score their parents support together again.

Even today, and in spite of its familiarity, it’s an comic view, and while the valid script is venerable in spots the cast, and especially Haley Mills, makes the most of it. There’s plenty of slapstick, lots of laugh-out-loud scenes, and enough charm to beguile all but the most cynical viewers. And Haley Mills clearly demonstrates why she was regarded as the single most gifted child actor of her era: although she plays both Susan and Sharon with the same edge of sportive fun, they do indeed near off as completely different personalities.
Of course, digital technology has left the conventional split-screen technique in the dust, and today its easy to recognize the flaws in the technique that weren’t so certain at the time. And the quality of the film transfer is not the best: while this isn’t the worst transfer I’ve seen, it is beefy of artifacts nonetheless. Even so, the appeal of the myth, the cast, and most particularly Haley Mills acquire up for a lot, and this Disney double DVD comes complete with a host of bonuses (including a making-of documentary and an audio commentary track by director David Swift and Haley Mills) that fans will bask in quite a bit.
If you were a fan of the film then, you’ll remain a fan of it now. And if you want to introduce your family to a truly charming movie experience, you couldn’t accomplish a better choice.

–GFT (Amazon Reviewer) –
The Parent Trap is, by far, my well-liked movie. I couldn’t negate you exactly how many times I’ve seen it, but it would probably be somewhere around 300 times. I know it word for word, and can actually quote the movie for someone at any time, which I have done quite a bit, along with my sister, Jennifer. The Parent Trap stars Hayley Mills playing twin daughters of a divorced couple (Brian Keith and Maureen O’Hara) . The girls, who have long been separated, meet accidentally for the first time at summer camp. After discovering they are long-lost twin sisters, the two concoct an foul plan to switch places in an disaster to collect their parents assist together. Personally, I don’t like the original Parent Trap. The aged one is impartial… classic. Although, I have done a “observe” with my friend, Elizabeth (another fan of the mature one), and found that kids born from 1990 and up seem to like the unusual Parent Trap better than the stale one, while it’s opposite with people born from 1989 and below. No matter how customary you are, however, I know you’ll adore The Parent Trap (1961) . I highly recommend it to you. First of all, there is no “sexual perversion” or “sexual atrocities” in this film. But it IS brought to you by the director of “Caligula”. “Salon Kitty” is a very lush, very raunchy and very graphic sexploitation film region in 1939 Europe about an SS officer who converts a common brothel into a glance operation staffed with specially trained and selected girls. The madam, Kitty (Ingrid Thulin), doesn’t understand why she had to relocate and restaff and is unaware of the covert goings on. It supposedly is being done to blackmail positive officials but this kind’ve takes a benefit seat to the nudity and sexual cavorting. The officer (Helmut Berger) is a crooked and tortured soul—incapable of any sort of sexual relations or relationships. The heroine, prostitute Margarita (Teresa Ann Savoy), looks innocent but is satisfactory of handling the most demanding situations imaginable. She ends up cluing Kitty into what’s going on and helping bust the whole thing initiate. Nazi symbols are everywhere (even on garters!) and some scenes are mind-boggling in their silliness. At times I was wondering if the whole thing was a satire. But some non-sexual scenes (like the slaughterhouse) are repellent in the improper. The costumes are extravagant and gorgeous and edifying to the decadence of the brothel. Miss Kitty’s song numbers (oh yes, she performs, too) are a bit powerful in their Dietrich-esque sultriness. Thulin resembles an aging slither queen as she carries on in her over-the-top costumes and blonde wigs. Savoy is fair (and looks disturbingly too young) but cannot act for esteem nor money. And she has chances at both in this film. Berger is all pomp and starch as the officer. He’s believable. You wonder if he’s joyful at times. He refuses the services of Kitty’s girls but tries with Savoy. It’s terrible because he’s too cool and too far gone. The sex in “Salon Kitty” IS rather ghastly but there’s substantial male and female nudity for voyeurs. The soundtrack is good—with appropriately decadent music and song numbers pleasant to the period and state. The DVD print is mostly noble but ranges from too dusky in some scenes to quite intellectual in others. Overall, it’s watchable with plenty of extras and a second disc all about “Salon Kitty”. A collector’s item for those with a taste for this sort of thing. Honest be careful who you demonstrate it to. It’s very odd stuff.
Classic Teto Brass. I could definetly spy the similarities with Caligula. Very professional production. But lots of wierd fetish stuff like sex with amputies, and disfigured people (most exact) . However, even though this was an NR version there was no coitus. A few distant shots of a very hairy crotch, and plenty of shots of limp male organs. Suitable acting though, and a very capable record. If you are watching this for the sex scenes, go rent a Penthouse video. This was all about fetish and androgity. There are some very curious perversions and they exhibit unbiased how sick the Third Reich really was, as I understand radiant apt. If you are an adult and delight in accurate movies, this is as trusty as they acquire. If you are a prude and don’t savor seeing the human body in all it’s forms (some not very trustworthy to scrutinize at), than definetly skip this one.

Woody Allen’s “Hannah and Her Sisters” is the finest of the neurotic writer-director-actor’s pictures. His prowess in weaving together complete characters and compelling storylines is as intricate as Altman, as artful as Renoir. Yes, those are “expansive movie terms,” but are warranted in describing this bitersweet marvel.
Allen’s exclaim of the medium results in some terrific photographic shots, including the classic “camera-revolving-around-the-table” sequence featuring Hannah (Mia Farrow) and her sisters (Barbara Hershey and dynamite Oscar-winner Dianne Wiest), whose lives all seem to be going through very adult mid-life crises with their husbands, ex-husbands, boyfriends, and families. Michael Caine’s work in this film also shines, and Allen himself is in his prime. The ensemble cast in this film creates an atmosphere that has you really believing you’re watching friends and family, and not simply actors acting, reciting lines, a spot even the better “ensemble films” often face.
All of the elements in this characterize — cinematography, classic jazz tunes, nearly-musical dialogue — are on gigantic point to in a film rich with human warmth and astronomical laughs. Although Allen’s films are not for all tastes, this is a film that should very easily be enjoyed by nonfans and especially film students who can acquire a chance to eye a virtuoso talent at the top of his obtain, not conforming by passe storytelling and filmic norms.
Without a doubt, this is my most accepted of Allen’s works. This film is an American classic, and it needs to be on the list of the 100 greatest American films. I, too, lament that it is no longer available–but thanks to the dazzling Amazon.com, I was able, last month, to steal this in an online auction. I now possess this proper film whose themes range from fancy (what else? it’s Woody Allen), to general despair and the search for God in an ostensibly godless and hostile universe, to infidelity (why not? ), and infertility giving scheme to miraculous pregnancies (the last line of the film is, after all, uttered by Weis’s character: “I’m pregnant” she tells a confused and then moved Allen) ; and, of course, there is that well-known query students of Allen’s must ask: “Do we have the proper to consider we deserve more or that we deserve to be contented? ” I’ll let the film acknowledge that for you.

A brilliantly comedic performance is given by Diane Weist who plays Holly, the most boisterous and fame-driven of Hannah’s sisters, and who fights so comically with Carrie Fisher’s April over architect David played keenly by Allen fixture Sam Waterston (observe Waterston and Weis in Allen’s “September”; they’re breathtaking together) . Mia Farrow is adequate as Hannah–mother, stage actress, and Thanksgiving hostess–and Barbara Hershey leaves us wintry as the great sought-after Lee. Bergman icon and Allen hero Max von Sydow gives an clear performance as the angst-ridden artist in the 20th century (this was the 80s…) Allen also gives a shiny but by now familiar comedic performance as hypochondriac and god-searcher Mickey Sacks. And Michael Cain is well-behaved as Hannah’s wandering husband, Eliot.
The film revolves liturgically around the seasons and around the most Protestant of holidays, Thanksgiving–the scenes were filmed in Farrow’s real-life Unusual York apartment (she talks about it in “What Falls Away,” available from Amazon.com) . Sophisticated jazz tunes contain the house from Hannah’s father, played by Lloyd Nolan, and Farrow’s trusty mother, Maureen O’Sullivan (remember her swim with Tarzan? ) plays the reminiscent and libidinous mother–”honest a boozy feeble flirt with a filthy mouth.” These Thanksgiving scenes are designed splendidly–around the other seasons of the year–to note us each character’s progression (or lack thereof) .
The soundtrack (which I also beget on tape, not CD, unfortunately) is what makes this film so pleasing. Melodies swell up from the right American composers and musicians–Rodgers and Hart, Cole Porter, Count Basie. The film is skittish by two melodies serving as themes: “Isn’t It Romantic? ” and “Bewitched.” These songs are woven seemlessly into scene after scene in peevish and unfortunate ways. This soundtrack is perfect for a rainy day.

Ice Location Zebra is one of my approved flims next Where Eagles Dare, The Green Berets, and The Expansive Elope. I.S.Z. begins when Navy submarine commander James Farraday (Rock Hudson) is asked to seize a British agent (Patrick McGoohan) to a remote outpost known as Ice Region Zebra to score a downed Russian satilite that occupy top secret photos of Western missile installations. Tagging along with Farraday is a tough no-nonsense Marine captain, brilliantly acted by Jim Brown, unique from his role as a prisoner turned soldier in Dirty Dozen. Also tagging along is a defecting Russian played by Oscar-winner Ernest Borgnine. And starring in a cameo in this relate is war movie feeble Lloyd Nolan who plays a U.S. admiral. This movie should have been nominated for Best Special Effects, Best Record, Best Cinematgraphy, and for Best Sound Effects. I hope that this “lost” gem of a movie is released on DVD format. I wish they would release it in DVD. If you like action movies about the frosty war, give this movie a try, I recemend it.
At times a taut and effective thriller that seems the pattern for powerful of Tom Clancy’s books, “Ice Set Zebra” has a fairly simple plot: a spot capsule with top secret photographs crashes, prompting a hurry between the Soviets and Americans to recover it from the polar icecap. Yet, the tension is kept reasonably high, even as considerable of the movie is spent aboard the U.S. submarine carrying the recovery team. Rock Hudson is, well, rock solid as the submarine captain–cool, thoughtful, and easy-going, he plays well against the skulking but ironic British recognize (a teriffic Patrick MacGoohan, essentially playing the same fraction he always does in the device only he seems able to) that may or may not be a saboteur. Viewers will leer other familiar faces–Jim Brown and Ernest Borgnine among them–that root the film in the 60s, and the whole production–including the cinematography, special effects, and acquire by Maurice Jarre–are topnotch. The only exact weaknesses to the film are the mystery of who is the double agent and an action ending that seems almost anticlimactic when compared to the superb tension in the rest of the anecdote. Unruffled, it’s a better espionage thriller than most of those found in theaters today.

“Zombie Diaries” is about several groups of people separated from each other in rural England outside London. A virus has spread across Europe and the Americas and has now reached England. Most of English society was ill prepared for this, following the news events in other countries while feeling a sense of apathy for being located so safely away from pains. The film documents the movements of these people as they attempt to pick up supplies or flush out infested areas. The characters are likable, ordinary people. There is hardly any character development, but we do net a feel for the psychological impact the trauma is having on the protagonists.

The film is shot documentary style. In light of Romero’s novel “Diary of the Dumb”, one would reflect this is unprejudiced an indie copy; however, this film does stand on its hold separately. The Romero social commentary is absent. The videographer protagonists are many, and are driven to portray for different reasons. Additionally, it’s easier to care about these protagonists than in DIOTD. The videography is not amateurish like in “Blair Witch Project”, and doesn’t interfere with the ability to peek the film as in BWP. The voyeuristic camera style of the videographer’s POV is more effective here than in Romero’s Diary of the Uninteresting.
The movie does have a very distinctly English feel to it in terms of pacing. It doesn’t follow the now musty zombie film of style of using twitch camera action, fast-charging zombies, heavy blood and guts, or archetypal apprehension protagonists; but instead merges the finer elements of Romero’s classic “Night of the Living Lifeless” with Boyle’s “28 Days Later”. In some respects it carries elements from Ragona’s 1964 classic, “The Last Man on Earth” with Vincent Brand. The atmospheric music really adds to the sense of alarm. The zombies follow the fresh Romero NOTLD and Fulci Zombi convention of being slow-moving, shambling corpses. What microscopic noise they create is subtle. The makeup work is very effective. Another element which separates “Zombie Diaries” from other extinct alarm films in the genre is the lack of intentional or even unintentional humor. The film is bleak from launch to effect.

This is not a gorehound’s treat however. If you’re a fan of the “Dawn/Day of The Dreary” remakes and revisions or of “Automation Transfusion”, you will likely not like this movie.
As a lifelong fan of the genre, I can easily recommend this film. It’s posthaste becoming a personal well-liked.
Zombie Diaries is a zombie film under Dimension Extremes line of work. The movie is situation in England, offers up former school listless appealing zombies, and trades in heavy CGI for realism.
I unprejudiced watched this movie twice in one week, alongside with Romero’s “Diary of the Humdrum”. Many have pointed out these movies are quite different and are strongly separated by budget and conception. Both films are decent, but one ‘diary’ comes out ahead.
Without breaking too worthy details the movie is in course of movements. The film shifts from different understanding points and locations along England to give you a better concept of what’s truly going on in this infestation. Each time it changes the scenario remains the same, though the groups are quite different in actions and emotional quotients. TO be shapely the movie begins with a well-kept idea of the nations feelings toward other infected regions. So you do net some impending alarm for what’s going to happen.
What keeps this movie enthralling is the realism, though at times it seems a uncouth budget adds to that factor. Cameras rolling with amateur looking gear, but not all too awful filming on the characters behalf. The curious thing to me is the gloomy ambient music during encounters, Romero’s film at least explained why music has been added during ‘real recordings’. Oh well, the foggy ambiance definitely helps us adjust to this morbid film.
It retains morbidity throughout without over indulging in gore, in fact I like the stylistic ‘less is more’ diagram. Seems many directors lend the gore to its success or awe factors, while this may work in squeamish films like Eli Roth’s “Hostile” series, a film trying to do realism might back from being a microscopic bit reserved. I mediate it works titanic for this film, when a moment is meant to puncture your memory it does so.
Overall a variety of locations are shown (though all fairly similar), you acquire some hope some despair, some finish calls, and some grisly revelations. It has everything a movie would need to sell, with it being a stripped down title it serene holds up generating many of the honest elements most films need but can’t provide.
Shaky cam, cam blur, night visions, clipping frame rate, you can stammer this is a more realistic environment, one with earthly tones never too saturated. The acting though not qualified is better then I expected, a lot of improvisatory went into this film. Watching the documentaries included on this disk really helped me understand the struggle they went through to create it, the effects crew really shined with so itsy-bitsy time.
The doc also goes on to justify actors weren’t filled in entirely on what’s going to happen, so again the improvisation does nice wonders on a zombie movie like this. Keeps the scare genuine, unusual, and suspenseful.
Here are my opinions on the film overall:
Pros: Documentary= substantial understanding, faded school zombies are nice, ambience is also a nice addition, realism embraced by scare. Majority of the characters are likable, but maybe a bit too similar.
Cons: With as many movements/changes between characters, plots become a puny watered down, a majority of the film is rationalizing or over estimating a spot. Though the movements are decent, they don’t leave for a qualified mixture. With as distinguished talking that goes on no character is too boldly fleshed out, though realistic in dialect not so worthy on individuality.
The movie could have been worse, and by that I mean considerable worse. Zombie movies need room to breathe, we can’t always have the same stale same passe. So while not legend or intrepid, it slides past the awful notice to the decent brand for its different takes on things (though some have been done before)

The DVD release of “White Zombie” does justice to one of the gargantuan dismay films of the 1930s, not to mention one of Bela Lugosi’s finest hours. It looks and sounds terrific. In addition, the supplemental Lugosi interviews are a nice touch. If you never have seen “White Zombie,” you’re missing one of the most atmospheric and stylish anxiety films ever made. Transferred from a pleasing 35mm print, the Roan Group has done wonders in its restoration of the Lugosi classic.
Between the introduction of sound and the imposition of the Hollywood Code, some of the most inventive movies ever seen were produced and ‘White Zombie’ is a prime example. On paper, the status is shapely basic. However it is the ultra-strange premise – zombies roaming around the Haiti countryside working as slaves for a power-mad Bela Lugosi – that makes the film so new. It doesn’t have the polished feel of the classic Universal horrors such as ‘The Mummy’ or ‘Frankenstein’ but it lacks nothing in imagination. The movie also benefits from profitable direction and apt location designs. A lot of credit must go to the ‘Roan Group’ for the production of this DVD. We secure the obligatory trailer and commentary but the accurate bonus is the record quality. You will not procure a better print of ‘White Zombie’ anywhere. Do not produce the mistake of thinking ‘White Zombie’ is a museum share only of interest to film buffs because of its age. The selling point of this DVD is that above all ‘White Zombie’ is highly spellbinding, so don’t unprejudiced scrutinize it – indulge in it!
